What the Flag?!

What the flag?! Greylight Projects (NL) Curated by Roy Voragon

A growing collection of flags made by artists —  What the flag?! is a project initiated in 2016 by Wouter Huis.

In this pairing of flags — "Scattered stars are on my left, A fierce sun is on my right" Rose Nordin implements an adapted phrase from a Malay magic incantation recited as part of a ritual to save wandering souls after death. The scattered stars refer to the rice grain thrown over the shoulder of the living in the ceremony of connecting and locating the dead. The position of the sun situates the time and place of the incantation. The flags standing relationship locates the  visiting living in a space that offers placement between realms.  The distorted, talismanic "M" symbols are generated from a wider interest in the mystical powers of letterforms, and the shamanitic role of those dealing in text and letter arrangements.
